Thus, it was notmisleading if Indonesian Muslims took the model of a modernstate that was available in the twentieth century, as long as thismodel was able to fulfill Islamic ends and provide solutions forthe real demands of Indonesian Muslims.Writings During the Revolution Period (1945-1949)Natsir did not publish many articles during the revolutionperiod. His efforts in the struggle to defend independence, both asa member of KNIP and as minister of information, seemed todecrease his intellectual activities. One or two of his articles fromthis period were speech texts for Muslim anniversaries, and somearticles were published in Majalah Hikmah (Yogyakarta)and Aliran Islam (Bandung). Natsir warned Muslims that fightingfor national sovereignty was a jihad fi sabilillah (struggle in theway of God). On the Adha anniversary, he reminded people thatthe sincere sacrifices of the Prophet Abraham and Ismael shouldbe the model for Indonesian Muslims in upholding independenceand religion in their country. He said that, based on the history ofall nations in the world, independence could be firm only when it%u201chad been poured from the blood of its martyrs%u201d. This had beendone by Indonesian Muslims, who, since early times, had beenfighting against foreign intruders.Other writings by Natsir were intended to respond to theactual political situation.
